Chasma Plains

Description

I don't know if I put this in the right category. ^^;

Anyway, everything in this picture was done in August except for the eyes. ^^; I kinda procrastinated and only got around to doing them tonight.

I'm really happy with how this picture turned out. Not only did I get to explore new ways to color, shade, and layer pictures, but I got to use my creativity and draw things I don't normally draw. On top of it all, it uses a color scheme I don't normally use. :) A very nice color scheme, if I might add.

Anyhoo, this is a picture of the Chasma Plains, a geographical range of rolling grasslands and savannas dominating Northeastern European Russiac, right above the Raven Jungle. The Chasma Plains has some of the most technologically advanced cities on the planet; however, those cities are also some of the most eco-friendly on the planet. Home to the zebra-like Land Erarites, the Chasma Plains has a great reputation.

The plains are characterized by their constant gales of wind, the perfect fuel for a wind turbine-oriented civilization. The rolling hills of green grass are virtually undisturbed by trees, sans the Great Arbor that stands by the Land Erarite capital. The Great Arbor is a completely massive tree home to the dragon-like God of Wind. Another point of interest in the Chasma Plains is its namesake: the Chasma Pit, a long chasm that cuts a line through the pastures. The Chasma Pit, home at the bottom to pools of lava and giant carnivorous plants (known as Chasma), holds the Tower of Illusions, the home of Veeno.

Many grazing animals live on the Chasma Plains, enjoying the endless warm, sunny days and the refreshing breeze only the Chasma Plains can boast. Thanks to the nearby Raven Jungle, the Chasma Plains gets rainforest-grade nutrients in its soil, allowing the grass to grow thick and healthy. The only thing to watch out for are the Chasma, large bud-like plants that have taken a liking for eating meat that pass by.

Every year, the people of the Chasma Plains hold a Festival of the Winds around the Great Arbor in honor of the God of Winds, Zephyr. The day of the festival, Windsday, is the windiest day of the year. Large windchimes are set up around the tree so that the wind creates an orchestra of calming music. There are dances, feasts, and games set up all around the tree. It's a pretty popular thing for tourists to go to.

In short, the quiet, windy plains of northeastern European Russiac has a little something for everybody.

(a little post-note, it seems I was mistaken; most Russiac things that are copyrighted as being from 2006 are actually from 2005, while the Major Gods are from 2004)

EDIT 2009: Considering how nice this picture still looks despite its age, I'm opening it to critique. :)

Ooh, what a lovely art piece (I've said that a lot, it's getting old... maybe not! <img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/a…" width="19" height="19" alt="^^;" title="Sweating a little..." />)! But this isn't about the pink and fluffy 'this art rocks' comments. Oh no. This is about revealing the black hole of critique that lurks beneath the pink fluffy comments. (Gawd I have a weird imagination when writing opening paragraphs to critiques).

OK first of all, let's start with my personal favourite parts for critique: THE BACKGROUND. It is beautifully done, and the subtle blending in the sky looks fantastic. OK, I'm not going to pull you up about the vibrancy, because it's not too vibrant. It works really well. Although I could suggest adding a bit extra to it, perhaps mixing in a tiny hint of pale yellow to suggest sunlight.

Next up: THE FOREGROUND. The land has been done well, and you've got a good semblance of depth, with grass blades being visible the closer they are, then they are not so visible further back. Also, the fact that the wind turbines go smaller as you go further back also adds to the depth. Although, there is a problem with the sharpness. I feel that the wind turbines which are further back should be less sharply focused than the ones at the front. And the buildings look great, but again they are too sharply focused. Easy to rectify - just need to either blur it or make the colours slightly paler. Oh, and the tree could do with being less sharply focused, to help to add to the depth.

Thirdly, THE CHARACTERS (which I'm taking to be the clouds). They look really cute with the big eyes and simple expressions. But I've got a slight problem with the eye shape. Of course, if it's your style, it ain't a problem. But clous are puffy and soft, but the eyes have sharp points, which perhaps doesn't go. Normal eyes are almond-shaped, but normal eye shapes wouldn't work. Instead, you should try to make the eyes more elliptical in shape and remove the extreme points. Just to stick with the fluffiness of clouds.

Summary

<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletpurple:" title="Bullet; Purple" /> Good semblance of depth.
<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletpurple:" title="Bullet; Purple" /> The background isn't too vibrant.
<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletpurple:" title="Bullet; Purple" /> The cloud characters look really cute.

<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletblue:" title="Bullet; Blue" /> Perhaps add a bit of yellow to one part of the sky to suggest sunlight.
<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletblue:" title="Bullet; Blue" /> Maybe make the eyes of the cloud characters less severely pointed.

<img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b…" width="10" height="10" alt=":bulletred:" title="Bullet; Red" /> Background elements are a bit too sharply focused.

Well, another great piece, as always! <img src="e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)" />
You're probably bored of me critiquing your arts nao... maybe.
